At RLB, our commitment to making progress happen extends beyond projects; it reaches into the heart of our communities. One way we do this is through our ongoing support for the Mustangs Cricket Club in McGregor, Western Cape.

McGregor is a small 19th-century village that forms part of the Western Cape’s broader wine route network. Established in 1861 and originally known as Lady Grey, the village was renamed in 1905 to honour Rev. Andrew McGregor, who served the Dutch Reformed Church in the area for over 40 years.

Founded in 2021, the Mustangs bring together more than 20 local youngsters competing in both 50-over and 15-over matches. In a village of fewer than 5,000 residents, cricket has become more than just a sport; it keeps young people engaged, off the streets, instils discipline, and inspires ambition. For underprivileged children, participation in team sports can lower the long-term risk of depression and anxiety, especially for those who have faced difficult upbringings, issues often amplified in low-income communities.

Unemployment in McGregor is a constant concern, limiting opportunities and contributing to social issues. The Mustangs Cricket Club has become a positive outlet thanks to the dedication of their coach, who runs the team purely out of love for the players. From boys as young as 10 to one member aged 40, he aims to keep them occupied over weekends, steering them away from drugs, petty crime, and the influence of gangs.

Like many grassroots teams, the Mustangs face challenges such as limited facilities, scarce funding, and few sponsorship opportunities. Since 2023, RLB has provided annual support through various sponsorship initiatives, vital assistance without which the team would struggle to compete or even survive. A key part of this support is helping with transport to away matches, ensuring the team can travel to compete against others, as well as covering the cost of some playing fields. Our latest contribution includes personalised, custom-designed match-day shirts for every player and the team manager, each featuring the player’s name and number on the back. In addition to the shirts, we also supplied five practice cricket bats, crafted by a local resident, along with branded water bottles. CEO Nicolas Sheard personally delivered these items during his visit to McGregor on 9 August.

It was great to visit McGregor again and spend time with the Mustangs team. Their enthusiasm reminds us that when we invest in youth, we’re investing in the future of our communities.

Nicolas Sheard, CEO RLB Africa

In line with our social responsibilities and commitment to creating a better tomorrow, we are proud to support an initiative that provides a sense of belonging and purpose while strengthening community ties.
