Sunshine Coast University Hospital takes home top property award
May 20, 2019.
The $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital has been recognised as Australia’s best public building in 2019, with a national award for innovation and excellence.
Developer Lendlease was presented with the Woods Bagot Award for Best Public Building at the 2019 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards in Sydney last week.
A sustainable superstar
‘This state-of-the-art health facility is a sustainable superstar,’ says the Property Council’s Chief Executive, Ken Morrison.
The hospital, which opened in 2017 is the largest healthcare building to ever receive 6 Star Green Star ratings for design and construction from the Green Building Council of Australia.
‘The hospital has reset our expectations for green healthcare in Australia, and carefully balances environmental considerations like energy efficiency with people-centric design,’ adds RLB’s Queensland Managing Director David Stewart.
By orienting the buildings to the sun, the hospital’s healing spaces are designed to optimise sunlight while reducing heat and glare. A central landscaped courtyard creates a large outdoor room, which also reduces the load on building systems and enhances the access to fresh air, natural light and views of nature.
The hospital was officially opened in April 2017 with around 450 beds, with plans to grow to 738 beds by 2021.
