RLB Employee Excellence Awards announced

The RLB Employee Excellence Awards have been announced for 2019. Now in their fifth year, these awards recognise staff who go the extra mile to make extraordinary contributions, and in so doing, demonstrate RLB’s values.

Three individuals have been selected from a field of exceptionally high calibre entrants.

Overall Winner / Young Achiever Award

Matthew Gabell
Senior Quantity Surveyor, Adelaide

Matthew Gabell began his career with RLB in 2015 performing a key role on the ALDI South Australia store rollout. This high performing team went on to win the RICS Quantity Surveying Team of the Year in 2016. Matthew is 2IC in delivering the pioneering Lot Fourteen precinct redevelopment earning him a strong reputation as a trusted advisor.

Matthew has been a key contributor to the delivery of the Lot Fourteen redevelopment, which is being transformed into Australia’s first creation and innovation neighbourhood. The Lot Fourteen site is the former Royal Adelaide Hospital and the majority of the non-heritage hospital buildings are being demolished and the site remediated to create new public spaces as well as commercial, educational, arts, cultural, tourism and accommodation development opportunities. There are also several heritage buildings that are being retained and repurposed, offering great opportunities for activations, short and long term tenancies and redevelopment.

Matthew’s proactive nature, reliability, transferable skills from previous construction industry employment and his collaborative approach to his work continue to benefit the Australian first creation and innovation neighbourhood.

Excellence in Innovation Award

Colleen Engel-Mallon
Associate, Engineering Services, Sydney

Colleen Engel-Mallon’s combined industry knowledge and professional skills render her as a highly valued and respected member of the NSW team. Colleen is a driving force behind adoption of integrated digital engineering processes and capabilities in RLB, both nationally and internationally. As a key member of RLB’s Global Digital Advancement Committee (GDAC), Colleen has been a catalyst for change, promoting a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship to ensure that RLB is strategically positioned to benefit from this industry-wide shift to a digitalised built environment.

Colleen has been instrumental in the development of RLB’s global protocols on digital engineering and is a key member of GDAC. She understands that digital engineering and technological advancements are fundamentally impacting the built environment and transforming the way our industry operates. This presents enormous challenges but also immense opportunities for RLB. Colleen has demonstrated a unique appreciation of this context, proactively driving adoption of innovative processes, methods and skills alongside her daily workload pressures and deadlines.

Excellence in Business Performance Award

Trent Kennedy
Quantity Surveyor, Melbourne

Trent joined RLB in Victoria in January 2017 as a Graduate Quantity Surveyor and in the short time he has been with the firm, he has excelled to a level that surpasses his peers. In addition to his key roles in some of the most iconic projects in Victoria, such as West Side Place Stage 2 ($680M), Caulfield Village ($200M) and 555 Collins Street ($250M),Trent is instrumental to RLB’s exposure and expertise in the field of timber construction.

The use of engineered wood products as an alternative to reinforced concrete is an emerging construction methodology of which RLB is currently at the forefront. Not only is it’s use sustainable, but it has also been proven to be a cost effective alternative to concrete in some scenarios, as evidenced by work that Trent has produced.
