Extensive refurbishment of a significant heritage building
August 19, 2020.
Among the nominees for the 2020 Property Council New Zealand / Rider Levett Bucknall Property Industry Awards is the refurbishment of Christchurch Town Hall.
The project has been shortlisted in two award categories – Civic and Arts Property Award and Heritage and Adaptive Reuses Property Award.
Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) provided commercial certainty to Christchurch City Council led by Malcolm Timms.
Following the 2010/11 earthquakes, the Christchurch Town Hall suffered serious damage to its structure and lateral spread to its foundations due to liquefaction and ground displacement.
The lateral spread caused settlement of approximately 400mm across the building and flooding to the basement.
After investigating whether the building should be demolished and replaced or repaired, Christchurch City Council voted to repair the Town Hall and appointed Hawkins as the main contractor to repair the facility to 100% of New Building Standard.
This involved the installation of a new foundation solution together with structural repairs, strengthening of the building, and an upgrade and update of the structural, architectural, acoustic, fire, mechanical and electrical services.
It involved the extensive refurbishment of six interconnected elements, a new building to home the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and associated siteworks.
The Christchurch Town Hall is an iconic structure with world-renowned acoustic properties and a Group 1 Listed Heritage Building.
Christchurch Town Hall Conservation Project is owned by Christchurch City Council and designed by Warren & Mahoney.
