Enabling complex services of national importance

New Zealand’s air navigation service provider, Airways, is vying for the Civic and Arts Property Award at the 2020 Property Council New Zealand / Rider Levett Bucknall Property Industry Awards.

Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) provided commercial certainty to Auckland Airport led by Geoff Speck.

As part of Airways’ long-term operational strategy, a new modern facility at Auckland International Airport Ltd (AIAL) was built in readiness to take over full air traffic control for the whole country, should its Christchurch counterpart be compromised in a natural disaster, terrorism threat or other serious incident.

The hi-tech building, the technology it houses and the complex services it enables, is considered of significant national importance.

To ensure strict resilience and redundancy provisions were met, the building needed to be developed at ‘Importance Level 4’ (IL4) resulting in innovative, hi-tech design and construction, housed within AIAL’s ‘The Quad’ business precinct.

Aesthetically, what could have been a plain, uninspiring concrete bunker, is a visually striking, architecturally designed building with rich aeronautical references.

The facility is owned by Auckland Airport and designed by RTA Studios.

Together with the Property Council New Zealand, RLB is passionate about promoting and celebrating leading practice in the property sector via the Property Industry Awards program.

Congratulations to our 2020 finalists.
