The Design
With a capacity for 1,400 female prisoners, the HK$1.5 billion Lo Wu Correctional Institution has three zones: the minimum security Main Wing, and the medium security East and West Wings. Facilities outside the secured area include a central administration block, a visitor registration centre, a staff block, dog kennels, a sewage treatment plant, a car park and a utility block.
The Details
The site area is about 52,800 square metres, and the buildings range from one to six storeys. Features include energy-saving design, the use of natural light, natural ventilation and soft landscaping.
The project won a Citation for Institutional Architecture in the FuturArc Green Leadership Award 2011, and a Grand Award in the Green Building Award 2010, in the category New Building (Hong Kong) – Institutional/Community.
