Overview

The National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC), housed within the Prof. Lord Bhattacharyya Building, is a partnership between WMG, at the University of Warwick, Jaguar Land Rover, and Tata Motors European Technical Centre.

The NAIC is a unique project from its visionary objectives, collaborative stakeholders and funding through to the delivery of 33,000m2 of space for engineers, designers and academics to work together in. The stakeholders share a mission to develop novel technologies to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and to reduce CO2 emissions. As well as housing work on the latest advances in automobile technology, the NAIC will help develop a strong motor manufacturing base in the UK.

RLB was brought in as the lead consultant, engaged by the University of Warwick to provide full design services for the delivery of NAIC providing Project Management, Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management, Employer’s Agent and Principal Design Services.

The Details

Officially opened by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales in February 2020, the NAIC is the largest research centre of its kind in Europe and is home to 1,000 staff working across design, engineering and research, as well as future engineers on degree programmes. The project is supporting the manufacturing base within the West Midlands and students and academics are paving the way for the next generation of engines and vehicles that will be manufactured at nearby car plants, creating new opportunities for employment.

£150m funding came from the partners, with a further £15m (for the building) and £14.5m (for equipment in the Advanced Propulsion Research Laboratory) from the UK Government’s UK Research Partnership Investment Fund through Research England.

RLB led the design phase and project managed the construction process. The RLB team provided the initial design as well as the client-side technical advisory role throughout the project via its sub consultants.

In addition to learning space, front of house and office accommodation, the NAIC also contains over 50 specialist areas. Each specific area has its own functional space designed around its own requirements including; environmental and servicing, acoustic, and precise building geometry to allow the installation of specialist equipment such as engine dynamometers, virtual reality rooms and drive in simulators.
