The National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC) at the University of Warwick is driving the future of the automotive industry from the heart of the United Kingdom. A beacon for automotive research it brings together the brightest minds from industry and academia, to develop future vehicles and mobility solutions.
The Centre, housed within the Prof. Lord Bhattacharyya Building, is a partnership between WMG at the University of Warwick, Jaguar Land Rover, and Tata Motors UK. With £150m funding from these partners and £15m from the UK Government’s Higher Education Funding Council England.
RLB was brought in as the lead consultant, engaged by the University of Warwick to provide full design services for the delivery of NAIC providing Project Management, Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management, Employer’s Agent and Principal Design Services.
Due to officially open in 2019, the National Automotive Innovation Centre is the largest research centre of its kind in Europe, with 33,000m² space dedicated to automotive innovation. It will be home to 1,000 staff working across design, engineering and research, as well as future engineers on degree programmes.
RLB led the design phase and has project managed the construction process. The RLB team provided the initial design and continues to provide the client side technical advisory role via our sub consultants.
In addition to learning space, front of house and office accommodation, NAIC also contains over 50 specialist areas. Each specific area has its own functional space designed around its own requirements including; environmental and servicing, acoustic, and precise building geometry to allow the installation of specialist equipment such as engine dynamometers, virtual reality rooms and drive in simulators.
As a multistakeholder scheme, collaboration was an underlying theme of the design. The scheme brings together academia and industry to lead advancement in design and engineering and the development of new products and new technologies.
