Staffordshire University, Beacon Building
Client: Staffordshire University
Services: Project & Programme Management, Cost Management & Quantity Surveying
RLB was appointed to provide Cost Management, Project Management, and Principle Designer Services on Staffordshire University’s new Beacon Building.
The building has been designed to provide a high-quality teaching facility to respond to the new pedagogy and the demands of students. The technology rich facilities include 6 lecture theatres, seminar rooms with cutting edge AV facilities, IT Lab, student break out spaces, catering facility and café.
The building occupies a prominent position in the centre of the campus and on a main thoroughfare. Its external appearance was therefore extremely important to the University, who wanted the building to be a landmark and act as a “shining beacon”.
Due to the close proximity to other buildings, a key objective of the project was to minimise disruption to staff and students and to ensure the experience of the current cohort of students at the University did not suffer. This was achieved through careful logistics planning and engagement with the supply chain from an early stage in the project.
RLB’s proactive risk management approach with pre-agreed mitigation measures, and robust management of the design development process enabled the tight programme and budget to be achieved.
