Building the Future: A Conversation with Dipika Gopal
"I know I’ve made a difference when I can see that someone has grown because of something I’ve shared, whether it’s knowledge, encouragement, an opportunity, or simply believing in them."

With over a decade of experience spanning commercial developments to large-scale infrastructure, Dipika Gopal has built her career on a simple belief: leadership starts with listening.
She qualified at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2014, and today serves as Partner at RLB in KwaZulu-Natal, where her approach – setting a clear vision, staying accountable, and creating space for others to succeed – has earned her the trust and respect of everyone she works with. Whether she's advising clients on financial feasibility or guiding colleagues through complex challenges, she brings the same combination of clarity, integrity and hands-on commitment to every stage of a project.
What does this year's theme, "Empowered Women Empower The Nation," mean to you?.
To me, “Empowered Women Empower The Nation” is about recognising the strength, potential and influence that each woman carries, and using it to create a positive impact beyond herself.
I believe empowerment is not just about achieving success for yourself, but about becoming a source of strength, knowledge and inspiration for those around you. When women grow with purpose and help others grow with them, the impact reaches our families, workplaces, communities and ultimately the nation.
Construction and the built environment have traditionally been male-dominated industries. Have your experiences shaped your approach to leadership?
My experiences have shaped my leadership approach to be collaborative, people-focused and grounded in trust. Working across small, medium and large quantity surveying firms, I’ve learnt that good leadership is not about having all the answers; it’s about bringing out the best in the people around you.
I believe in listening, creating an environment where people feel valued and heard, and giving others the confidence and space to take ownership. The industry continues to evolve, and I think the strongest leaders are those who are willing to learn, adapt and bring different perspectives to the table.
How do you hope to influence the next generation of professionals entering the industry? And what advice would you give to young women considering a career in the built environment?
I hope to influence the next generation by being someone who shares knowledge, creates opportunities, and genuinely invests in people.
I’ve been fortunate to learn from many different experiences throughout my career, and I believe the best thing we can do is pass that knowledge on and help others grow. My advice to young women considering a career in the built environment is simple: be curious, back yourself and never be afraid to ask questions.
What makes RLB different?
If there is one thing you would like clients and colleagues to know about RLB, what would it be?
At RLB, we genuinely care about the people and relationships behind the work. We’re not just here to deliver a quantity surveying service; we want to understand our clients, their businesses and what success looks like for them, and then work alongside them to achieve it.
I’m proud of the depth of expertise within RLB, but even more so of our people, our culture and the way we collaborate. For me, that combination of technical excellence, relationships and doing the right thing is what makes RLB special.
What do you enjoy most about your role at RLB?
What I enjoy most about my role at RLB is the people and the variety. Every project, client and challenge brings something different, and I enjoy being able to work with talented people and contribute not only to projects, but to the growth of the business.
Being a partner also gives me the opportunity to have a broader impact - mentoring and developing people, building strong client relationships and helping shape the direction of the firm. I enjoy that no two days are the same, and that there is always an opportunity to learn, contribute and make a difference.
