Highlights
Brisbane saw an increase in the RLB Crane Index®, which rose from 89 to 100 points, with 73 cranes now operating across the city. Over the past six months, 20 cranes were removed while 28 were added. This level of activity aligns with the decade’s average for the capital. Throughout Southeast Queensland, total crane numbers also grew, increasing from 142 to 153.
The residential sector remains the leader, with 42 of Brisbane’s 73 cranes (57.5%). Across Southeast Queensland, residential projects constitute an even larger share at 75.8%. Health is the second-largest sector in Brisbane, with nine cranes, followed by mixed-use developments with seven. The commercial industry experienced a slight decline this quarter, with one fewer crane, bringing the total to six.
Construction activity across Queensland remains strong. Total construction work increased by 6.3% in Q2 2025 compared to the same quarter in 2024. Engineering activity rose by 7.4%, while non-residential building increased by 8.6%.
The CBD and surrounding precincts continue to be the hub of activity, hosting 54.8% of Brisbane’s cranes. Inner Brisbane recorded a net decrease of two cranes, with 14 removed and 12 added, leaving 40 cranes in operation.
New additions:
- Commercial: Queen Street (Brisbane)
- Health: Ipswich Hospital (three cranes), Logan Hospital (three cranes), Princess Alexandra Hospital (Woolloongabba)
- Mixed-use: 1 Masters Street (Newstead), James Place (Fortitude Valley)
Removals were recorded at:
- Civil: Cross River Rail – Boggo Road (Yeronga), Cross River Rail – Roma Street (Brisbane), Cross River Rail (Woolloongabba)
- Commercial: 360 Queen Street (two cranes), Park Road Station Upgrade (two cranes)
- Mixed-use: West Village (South Brisbane)
