The total value of building work put in place in 2025 in the North Island (excluding the Auckland, Waikato, and Wellington regions) was down 11.3% compared to 2024 (to $4.8b). The number of new building consents in the region has also fallen, down 8.4% in the year ended January 2026 (to 4,534 dwellings).
