This year marks a significant milestone for Tony Sutherland, recognising 40 years of contribution to Rider Levett Bucknall.

Over four decades, Tony has played a central role in shaping the built environment of the wider Wellington region, contributing deep technical expertise across heritage, commercial, civic and urban projects. His career reflects an enduring commitment to quality, rigour and thoughtful project delivery.

Tony’s portfolio includes many of Wellington’s most significant and complex developments, including the InterContinental Hotel, St Mary of the Angels, the Sarjeant Gallery, the Majestic Centre, Chews Lane precinct, One Market Lane and Clyde Quay Wharf, as well as decades of collaboration with Victoria University, most recently on Ngā Mokopuna. Across these projects, he is widely respected for his methodical approach, accuracy and detailed understanding of construction and cost planning.

His contribution to the profession has been recognised through multiple industry awards, including NZIQS Life Member recognition, reflecting both technical excellence and sustained commitment over many years.

Beyond individual projects, Tony has had a lasting influence on the evolution of RLB in Wellington. His emphasis on high standards, thorough documentation and careful analysis has shaped team practices and informed decision-making across the business. Colleagues value his steady judgement and remarkable recall of project detail, particularly on complex and sensitive projects. Bevan Hartley, Director, said:

“Tony has a remarkable ability to bring clarity to complex discussions. He listens carefully, considers every angle, then focuses on what truly matters. His calm, thoughtful perspective is something clients and our team genuinely value and trust.”

Tony’s 40 years with RLB represent a significant contribution to the organisation and to the wider Wellington construction landscape. His influence continues to be felt through the projects delivered, the standards upheld and the people who have worked alongside him.
