TE MANAWATAKI O TE PAPA
Tauranga City Council aims for a prestigious 6 Green Star rating, setting a benchmark for global sustainability. The project significantly reduces its carbon footprint by incorporating locally sourced mass-timber hybrid structural systems and natural terracotta. Onsite energy generation, natural ventilation, and rainwater harvesting reinforce its commitment to environmental responsibility.
Inspired by the natural flow of water, the design seamlessly connects the ngahere (forest) to the Moana (sea), cascading elegantly from Durham Street to Willow Street. Museum and exhibition spaces are sculptural timber volumes, symbolising traditional storage vessels such as baskets and calabashes.
The land beneath the Civic Precinct is historically significant for Mana Whenua and presents unique challenges and opportunities. RLB worked closely with project teams, fostering a collaborative, “best for project” approach that aligns with the broader vision while honouring cultural heritage.
Tauranga City Council envisions a vibrant civic space that celebrates diversity, enhances the natural environment, and provides a dynamic range of activities for all to enjoy.
