HOUSE ERICA STUDENT RESIDENCE

Transforming the past, building the future

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA

HOUSE ERICA

Established in 1968, Erica Ladies Residence stands as one of the University of Pretoria's oldest female student housing options, accommodating up to 300 residents from across the country.

The project involved a complete renovation of the existing main building to bring the residence up to par with the competitive standards of student accommodation around the University. Managing a tight timeline and multiple procurement contracts, the project was a delicate balance of providing modern updates while preserving the house’s 55-year heritage. This was all done within budget and with the imperative goal of achieving practical completion by December 2023 to accommodate the 2024 student intake. The 18-storey, all-female residence includes a laundry area, IT lab, recreation hall, and dining hall.

RLB’s scope of service was to provide full quantity surveying and financial management for the project. The renovation focused on several key areas to enhance the overall quality of House Erica. First and foremost, all asbestos materials used in the original construction were removed, ensuring a safer environment for the occupants. Additionally, stringent fire safety measures were implemented to make the building compliant and secure. To optimise functionality, all services within the structure were revamped, prioritising efficiency. Lastly, significant attention was devoted to enhancing the building’s aesthetic appeal, creating a welcoming and visually pleasing space for residents and guests.
