The impressive heritage restoration and transformation of Perth’s State Buildings, also known as the Old Treasury Buildings, has won Western Australia’s greatest property accolade – the 2017 PCA RLB WA Development of the Year award.

Developers FJM Property, transformed the three inter-connected, over 100-year-old buildings into a vibrant hospitality and retail precinct, and a luxury 48-suite hotel COMO: The Treasury.

Dating back to 1874, the buildings (which had been vacant for 20 years) have served as Perth’s post office, treasury, public offices, Office of the Premier and Cabinet, as well as a police cell block.

The painstaking restoration was undertaken by a design team comprising of Kerry Hill Architects, Palassis Architects (Heritage), and Spaceagency (Hospitality areas). This team, together with Built (the builder) undertook the works, including a complete services renewal along with extensive restoration of feature areas such as the atrium Postal Hall with lathe and plaster ceilings; external façade; external balconies; and a reinstated slate and copper roof. Decorative lacework was meticulously recreated from historical photographs.

The largest re-use project in WA

Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) provided cost management and quantity surveying services on the project. The RLB project team was led by Adam Robinson.

‘The largest and most ambitious adaptive re-use project of its kind in the state has given Perth’s tourism and employment a welcome boost,’ said Managing Director of RLB in Western Australia, Mark Bendotti.

He added, ‘This thoughtful and thorough restoration will ensure this grand old dame remains at Perth’s heart for many more generations.’

RLB has partnered with the Property Council of Australia to present the Innovation & Excellence Awards program since its inception in 1982.

The 2017 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Award winners will be announced on Friday 5 May at a gala dinner at the International Convention Centre, Sydney.
