Every day is different in the life of a quantity surveyor, but several characteristics remain consistent – the ability to forge strong and lasting industry relationships, to navigate complexity and remain committed to delivering exceptional results, regardless of the challenges thrown your way.

Esther Wong, Associate Director, Auckland

A badminton, squash and zen gardening enthusiast, Esther is an Associate Director with RLB and the key lead for several landmark projects.

Esther’s career journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and dedication to excellence. Her story starts from self-described humble beginnings in Malaysia. Despite initially aspiring to be a psychologist, Esther’s exceptional mathematical talent led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Quantity Surveying. She emerged from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh as one of the top five students.

With such a stellar academic record, Esther had no trouble landing her first role with a UK construction company, rising through the ranks in the UK before making several career defining moves to Singapore, Malaysia and then China. Her first mega-scale project was the US$1 billion Novartis Shanghai Campus, a “massive and complex” undertaking with more than 100 people based in the site office alone.

In 2016, Esther embarked on a new chapter in her career, joining RLB in Auckland as a senior quantity surveyor, where her meticulous work ethic and collaborative spirit quickly earned her recognition. Esther’s remarkable journey led to her promotion to Associate Director in 2022. Esther’s subsequent appointment as a team leader in 2023 is testament to her exemplary leadership, mentoring skills and dedication to fostering a solutions-focused team environment.
