The world’s most sustainable, self-sufficient shopping centre with its own rooftop urban farm has been awarded Victoria’s top property honour.

Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre by Frasers Property Australia was today crowned the Rider Levett Bucknall VIC State Development of the Year.

RLB Managing Director, Tony Moleta, congratulated Frasers Property Australia on its visionary development.

‘There is so much merit to this development with its ambitious goal to present itself as a sustainable urban farm incorporating natural power, organic waste re-purposing, on-site water treatment, and agriculture,’ Tony said.

‘Its vision to become the world’s most sustainable retail precinct and achieve accreditation under the Living Building Challenge is a feat that Frasers Property Australia and its project team need to be commended for.’

Designed by NH Architecture and delivered by Hacer Group, Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre was completed in December 2019. The centre covers approximately 13,000sqm of NLA and is anchored by Woolworths and home to Dan Murphy’s, Reading Cinemas and around 35 specialty tenancies.

It also includes Australia’s first shopping centre rooftop urban farm.

Simple efficiency underpinned by world-leading design

Property Council’s Victoria Executive Director, Danni Hunter, said the simple efficiency of the development was underpinned by a world-leading design and development approach that delivers extraordinary sustainability and regenerative benefits, alongside commercial and operational performance.

‘Burwood Brickworks is a development without precedent. It is sustainable in design and in operation, which has required extraordinary collaboration and collective will between Frasers Property Australia and the centre’s tenants,’ Danni said.

‘It’s a project truly worthy of this honour and we are incredibly proud that this kind of pioneering development is happening in our industry here in Victoria.’
