Building a complex urban project safely

MANCHESTER, UK

CIRCLE SQUARE

Circle Square is a vibrant and thriving neighbourhood at the heart of Manchester’s innovation district. It’s a place where people live, work, eat, drink and shop.

The masterplan for Circle Square includes 1,700 new homes, 1.2m sq.ft of commercial office space, 100,000 sq.ft of ground-floor retail and leisure space, a hotel, and a multi-storey car park all centred around Symphony Park, Manchester’s brand new city park with over 100 semi mature trees, 1000’s of flowers, plants and shrubs.

RLB was initially appointed to act as pre-construction principal designer for the commercial buildings and car park. This appointment evolved to include post-contract principal designer and CDM advisor for these projects, in addition to the masterplan infrastructure, hotel, retail and refurbishment of Manchester Technology Centre.

Collaboration with multiple stakeholders

RLB believes that Circle Square is a testament to collaborative working and shows that complex design does not have to come at the expense of health and safety. The project represents our principal designers at their best, implementing processes to improve communication, partnering with contractors to improve health and safety at site level, and working with the client to build on their awareness to make changes where they count.

“For more than seven years RLB’s building safety and assurance experts worked in close collaboration with us and our partners and stakeholders to help deliver Circle Square, Manchester’s vibrant new mixed-use neighbourhood. Throughout they demonstrated efficient and effective planning and co-ordination of work so that all risks involved were managed from start to finish.”
Charlie Entwistle, Senior Project Manager, Circle Square

The success of Circle Square led to RLB being awarded CDM Duty Holder of the Year in the 2019 Association for Project Safety Awards. The award recognises a team that has demonstrated outstanding leadership in design and construction health and safety risk management, and one that has shown transparent and unswerving commitment to the control of construction health and safety risk management.
